We Raced. We Embraced. We Empowered!
The Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® embarked on our 2008 Race season with the rallying cry of "Race. Embrace. Empower." And it seems that nearly everyone in Philadelphia and the surrounding regions took our call to action to heart-for an estimated 120,000 people swarmed Philadelphia's Eakins Oval on Mother's Day and raised $3.7 million.
Judging by this scene from the 2008 Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure, it should be little surprise that the event this year raised $3.7 million in support of the Komen promise. We thank everyone from the Delaware Valley-and far beyond-for your participation. Whether you were a sponsor, a runner, a walker, a volunteer, a virtual participant or supported us with your pledges, each one of you was a key contributor and very much appreciated by all. The level of work and commitment reached new highs for the Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure this year-and it showed in the smooth running of events on Race day.
For this year's Race in Philadelphia, we introduced several new features, all of which received great acceptance and, hopefully, will become long-standing traditions. These included: Komen in the Community grantee gallery; Soup for the Cure, compliments of renowned Chef Daniel Stern of Rae Restaurant; Sweet Memories, a 10-foot-high pink cake compliments of Jay Roseman and Classic Cake ceremoniously cut with cake provided for 6,000 participating survivors; Raising the Roof at the Finish Line Sponsorship by C.P. Rankin, Inc. roof management company; and "Hooting" it Up with Temple University football and "Hooter" mascot.
Now, work is already underway, and we all look forward to "improving upon the improvements" in 2009. Some exciting plans underway include:
- Expanded parking options
- Complimentary shuttle service from parking areas to the Race site
- Bigger, better entertainment lineup than ever (we're not saying who just yet, but be ready to be wowed!)
- New and fun ways for you to make every penny count to ending breast cancer
Be sure to return to our site frequently to learn more of the exciting 2009 Race news. We'll post periodic updates as more details are confirmed.
