FAQs about 3rd-Party & Passionately Pink for the Cure Fundraisers

To help you determine and best execute your fundraiser for the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate, we recommended you review the following Frequently Asked Questions and answers about the two basic categories of fundraisers - 3rd Party and Passionately Pink for the Cure.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 3RD-PARTY FUNDRAISER AND A PASSIONATELY PINK FOR THE CURE FUNDRAISER ?

Typically a 3rd Party Fundraiser is one held by a company or organization which is open to the public. Because of this, it requires aLetter of Agreement  (L.O.A), minimum guaranteed donation and an insurance certificate with Komen listed as an additional insured.

A Passionately Pink for the Cure fundraiser is one that is 'contained' to members of a company, group or organization, as well as those connected with it - for example a high school may hold a Passionately Pink event that includes students, faculty and family of students and faculty. It is not, however, open to the general public. Passionately Pink fundraisers do not require an L.O.A., guaranteed donation or, in most instances, an insurance certificate.

WHO OVERSEES MY FUNDRAISER FROM SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURE?

3rd-Party fundraisers must be reviewed and approved by the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate. Refer to Guidelines & Application.

Passionately Pink for the Cure is a program organized and managed by Susan G. Komen for the Cure National headquarters. Details are available at www.PassionatelyPink.org.

For both types of fundraisers, Komen and The Affiliate maintain an advisory role and may be able to provide some guidance. It is the responsibility of the organizer of the fundraiser/captain to handle all aspects the fundraiser; we are unable to provide administrative or logistical assistance for the fundraiser (e.g., distributing invitations, compiling RSVP's, selling tickets, sitting on steering committees, etc.). You should be prepared to provide all of the support necessary to organize and conduct the fundraiser, including PR and costs for the event/initiative.

www.PassionatelyPink.org is filled with tools and resources for you to use. In the case of 3rd-Party fundraisers, The Affiliate may be able to provide additional limited resources (such as guest speakers, literature, etc), determined on a case-by-case basis.

HOW MUCH AM I REQUIRED TO RAISE?

Susan G. Komen/The Philadelphia Affiliate does not determine how much money you must raise.

All 3rd-party fundraisers are required to pledge a guaranteed minimum donation amount. This is the amount that you promise to donate to Komen Philadelphia, regardless of the success of your fundraiser. If you have any questions about this requirement, please contact Ann@KomenPhiladelphia.org or call 215-238-8900.

Passionately Pink fundraisers have no guaranteed minimum donation requirement.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY I/MY TEAM RAISE GO?

All money raised for the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate is used to advance the Komen mission locally and globally.

Money raised by 3rd-Party fundraisers is given to The Affiliate, who sends 25% to Susan G. Komen for the Cure to support breast cancer research through the Komen for the Cure Grants Program. 75% remains with The Affiliate to support breast cancer programs in our 15-county service area through Affiliate initiatives and the work of our grantees.

Money raised by Passionately Pink fundraisers is given to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and used to support research as well as the work of Komen Affiliates in their communities. 25% of the money is contributed to the Komen for the Cure Grants Program. 75% is returned to fundraisers' local Komen Affiliate. If an individual donates to your Passionately Pink team but lives in a different Komen Affiliate service area than you, 75% his/her donation may be distributed to his/her local Affiliate.

WHICH TYPE OF FUNDRAISER IS BETTER/EASIER?

3rd-Party and Passionately Pink fundraisers are equally as valuable to Komen, The Affiliate and all those united in breast cancer movement. No matter how the money is raised, every dollar brings us one step closer to an end to breast cancer forever!

3rd-Party and Passionately Pink initiatives have equal fundraising potential; it's only limited by your creativity, resources and passion. Both can be small, medium or large in terms of the number of people and work involved.

Both 3rd-Party and Passionately Pink fundraisers have their benefits, however, as stated above, which type you chose to hold will be largely determined by the nature of your event/initiative... if it will include the public (people not immediately associated with your group/organization or company) or if it is 'contained' to a set group. In general, Passionately Pink fundraisers can be developed and implemented more quickly, because they do not require an L.O.A. or insurance certificates. However, this does not mean you should choose a Passionately Pink fundraisers to avoid these legal requirements - in fact if your chose to register your fundraiser as a Passionately Pink initiative, it is still your responsibility to make sure everything is in order to make it a fun, safe and successful happening for everyone.

We suggest you envision the type of event that is right for you and your community, and then determine if it is more appropriately registered as a 3rd-Party or Passionately Pink fundraiser. If you're not sure, please contact the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate at 215-238-8900 / info@komenphiladelphia.org.
