Camden County Screening Project: Empowering Latina Women to Take Charge of Their Health

OUR MISSION: to build a bridge of empowerment for generations of Latina women in Camden County.

...crossing over cultural barriers that - for far too long - have prevented Latinas from understanding,

talking about and standing up to breast cancer.

... connecting women in need to the breast health services that can save their lives.

... ensuring equality of care.

... giving all Latina women in Camden County the freedom to take on breast cancer and show that it is no longer a threat to them or their children.

ABOUT THE CAMDEN COUNTY SCREENING

The Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Camden County Screening Project is a first-ever initiative aimed at increasing breast cancer awareness, education and mammograms among uninsured and underinsured Latinas in Camden County, NJ.

Through the generosity of the project partners - Cooper University HospitalLourdes Health SystemVirtuaAble Imaging & Women's Center, and South Jersey Radiology Associates - the Project will:

  • Provide free 400 mammograms for eligible Latina women

  • Educate approximately 2,000 women on important breast health issues

HOW IT WORKS

Supported by grants from the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate, in June, 2011, the Camden County Screening Project team of healthcare professionals and outreach workers began embracing Latino communities throughout Camden County in the Komen Promise to do whatever it takes to end breast cancer forever - reaching out to Latina women with critical breast cancer education, messages of hope, and awareness that free mammograms are available to those who are underinsured and uninsured.

A woman determined to be eligible will receive a free mammogram from one of the Project partners, each of whom have donated 100 free mammograms for the project. Should a woman require further testing or treatment, she will be enrolled into the NJ CEED program and assigned a caseworker to help assure she receives the proper follow-up care.
